Guidelines for a better online meeting experience

General interruption avoidance steps

  1. Use a wired network connection, rather than a Wi-Fi connection. This will generally provide a more consistent and better quality network connection.
  2. During the web conference, don't run any intensive network applications on your computer (such as Internet radio or streaming video, or run significant uploads or downloads) that might compete with your call audio.
  3. Close other apps: This reduces device background activity and network usage.

To avoid audio interruption

  1. Connect any external audio devices such as a USB, microphone and headset before you start your meeting. If you connect devices after the meeting has started, they may not be detected
  2. You need to mute the noise disturbances in your mobile or computer to get a better quality of audio.
  3. Mute your microphone when you're not speaking and ask conference participants to mute when they are not speaking.

To avoid video interruption

  1. Test your video camera before joining the meeting to ensure that the camera is working correctly.
  2. Disable HD webcam video: sending high definition (HD) webcam video requires more bandwidth than sending non- HD video. Disabling HD video will free up more of your internet connection for other parts of your meeting.
  3. Keep still: stand your device on a desk or shelf, minimize head movement.
  4. Minimize rear movement: don’t stand in front of a busy area or window that faces a road or swaying trees.
  5. Camera distance: keep the camera in a distance of 1-2 metres from yourself.

On error message 'your internet connection is unstable'...

  • Fluctuations in internet service can cause this message, sometimes accompanied with stuttering video or audio issues. When the network is too slow, audio is prioritized so audio may be OK when video is not.
  • If you see this message and are transmitting your camera, try turning off your video. The bandwidth freed up by doing this may help improve the quality of remaining meeting components such as audio and screen sharing.
